Shirley Jackson, The Communications Pioneer Who’s Work Helped In Development Of The Touch Tone Telephone

Shirley Jackson is the Black woman who invented the touch tone telephone, the portable fax machine, solar cell and fiber optic cables necessary in overseas telecommunication.

Jackson was the first Black female to graduate from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) receiving all three graduate level degrees to include bachelor, master and doctorate in the area of physics.

Dr. Jackson is currently the 18th President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) which is the oldest technological university in the United States and located in Troy, NY.
