The girlfriend of Robert Pattinson, FKA twigs, recently shared her experience with racist remarks she has been hit with on Twitter over the course of the year.
What sparked all the hate?
It was the revelation that she and the Twilight star had started dating in July, 2014.
According to the Daily Mail, FKA twigs, born Tahliah Debrett Barnett, didn’t find it difficult to deal with the racial remarks until the trolls began flinging the hateful comments at her fans. Twigs had replied to a fan on the social media network who posted a photograph of himself and a friend who was dying of cancer. In the post, the fan stated the young fan used Twigs’ music to lighten her mood.
However, it was not too long after the posts that the hurtful comments began pouring in. Twigs told Katie Glass from the Sunday Times Magazine, “They all started attacking her. Within 20 seconds it was just like n*****, monkey, ugly, die b****, all this stuff on his feed. It broke my heart… this lady who is really sick and is probably going to die.”
Despite being hurt by the negative comments she and her fans received over the years, her parents prepared her early for this type of trouble. Being of English, Spanish, and Jamaican descent, her family warned her that she would be treated different because of her skin color.
She shared with Glass that her stepfather told her, “Sometimes people are going to treat you differently because of the color of your skin.
Sometimes you’re going to have to work 10 times harder than somebody else to get the same appreciation, but never use it as an excuse. I agree with that.”
Twigs was aware that she was different from her classmates when she attended school in Gloucestershire. In the interview, she shared: ‘I was very conscious of it. I was half-Jamaican, but I didn’t understand that side of myself. Western society tells you if you’re blonde, you’re beautiful; if you have green eyes, you’re beautiful; if you have fair skin, you’re beautiful.’
The singer started to attract more fans from her music in 2012 and since has become quite popular. That popularity sky-rocketed when she began dating Pattinson.
Both stars are uncomfortable with the fame they have achieved, but when asked if the relationship was worth the constant scrutiny, she said, “It’s like, is this person in my life worth that? And he is, without question… In comparison to how happy I am. And how I feel with him. It’s 100 percent worth it.”
